Nightly Encounters

He left the bar at 1:00 a.m and walked along the empty streets. It was a relief most calming, when his mind was settled, and on the edge of a dull sleep. The emptiness always felt like a dream.

He glided past the sleeping buildings hunched low to the ground, accompanied by the warm breeze. He continued by the smooth faced library, dark as velvet on the inside, and trailing sweet words. Only beyond it did he see a companion of the night.

A cat watched him from the front steps of the old courthouse. Captured in it’s yellow eyes, he stopped and watched back.

“Hi there,” he said.

The creature swayed its tale back and forth as it regarded him. He gave it a slight smile, then  wandered past. Cats they, were…

“Wait.” a voice whispered.

They was always something strange about them.
